It's only human for anyone to want to be in love But who wants to be in love in vain? At night you hang around the hall And eat your heart out And cry your eyes out And rack your brains You sit and wonder why anyone as wonderful as she Should cause you such misery and pain I thought that I would be in Heaven But I'm only up a tree 'Cause it's just my luck to be in love in vain You sit and wonder why anyone as wonderful as he Should cause you such misery and pain I thought that I would be in Heaven But I'm only up a tree 'Cause it's just my luck to be in love in vain

They used to tell me I was building a dream And so I followed the mob When there was earth to plow or guns to bear I was always there, right on the job They used to tell me I was building a dream With peace and glory ahead Why should I be standing in line Just waiting for bread? Once I built a railroad, I made it run Made it race against time Once I built a railroad, now it's done Brother, can you spare a dime? Once I built a tower up to the sun Brick and rivet and lime Once I built a tower, now it's done Brother, can you spare a dime? Once in khaki suits, gee, we looked swell Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum Half a million boots went slogging through Hell And I was the kid with the drum Say, don't you remember? They called me 'Al' It was 'Al' all the time Why don't you remember? I'm your pal Say buddy, can you spare a dime?

Big Stuff 03:23
So you cry What's it about, baby? You ask why Blues had to go and pick you So you go Down to the shore, kid's stuff Don't you know There's honey in the store for you, big stuff Let's take a ride on my gravy train The door open wide So you stare Call it despair, baby Don't you care I'm on the square about you Let's have a try It maybe that you're my guy Let's take a ride on my gravy train The door open wide Come in from out of the rain

I'll Get By 04:41
I'll get by as long as I have you Though there'll be rain and darkness too I'll not complain, I'll see it through Poverty may come to me, it's true But what care I, say I'll get by as long as I have you

Last night when we were young Love was a star, a song unsung Life was so new, so real so right Ages ago last night Today the world is old You flew away and time grew cold Where is that star that shone so bright Ages ago last night? To think that spring had depended On merely this: a look, a kiss To think that something so splendid Could slip away in one little daybreak So now, let's reminisce And recollect the sighs and the kisses The arms that clung When we were young last night

And when I told them how beautiful you are, They didn't believe me. They didn't believe me! Your lips, your eyes, your cheeks, your hair, Are in a class beyond compare, You're the loviest girl that one could see! And when I tell them, And I cert'nly am goin' to tell them, That I'm the man whose wife one day you'll be. They'll never believe me. They'll never believe me. That from this great big world you've chosen me! And when I told them how wonderful you are, They didn't believe me. They didn't believe me! Your lips, your eyes, your curly hair, Are in a class beyond compare, You're the lovliest thing that one could see! And when I tell them, And I cert'nly am goin' to tell them, That I'm the girl whose boy one day you'll be. They'll never believe me. They'll never believe me. That from this great big world you've chosen me!

I'll never smile again Until I smile at you I'll never laugh again What good would it do For tears would fill my eyes My heart would realize That our romance is through I'll never love again I'm so in love with you I'll never thrill again To somebody new Within my heart I know I will never start To smile again Until I smile at you Within my heart I know I will never start To smile again Until I smile at you

So In Love 05:24
Strange, dear, but true, dear, When I’m Close to you dear, The stars fill the sky, So in love with you am I. Even Without you My arms fold about you. You know, darling, why, So in love with you am I. In love with the night mysterious The night when you first were there In love with my joy delirious When I knew that you could care. So taunt me and hurt me, Deceive me, desert me, I’m yours ‘til I die, So in love, So in love So in love with you, my love, am I.

A Note from Jacob:

Michael Coleman and I first met in 2008. I had just moved to the Bay Area from Boston, and through the recommendation of a mutual friend we got together and played some tunes. We started playing together in a wide variety of contexts, and Michael quickly became one of my very closest friends and collaborators.

A few years later, as I was soon to move home to Seattle, I wanted to find a way to document our relationship up to that point. It seemed natural to come full circle and start exploring a set of old standards as a duo. Shortly after we started rehearsing, the tragic passing of legendary jazz drummer Paul Motian in November 2011 added another layer of meaning to this project.

For many of today’s jazz musicians, Paul Motian’s recordings of standards (esp. the On Broadway volumes) are by far the most compelling example of bringing early 20th century popular song into the modern age. In particular his interpretations of the Arlen masterpiece “Last Night When We Were Young” deeply inspired and challenged us. The perfect balance of being utterly unique and innovative, yet faithful and sincere. A profound way of saying, as the lyric goes, “today the world is old.”

This album is dedicated to the memory of Paul Motian.
