about

I've loved 'bebop' for a long time. I've played many of these songs hundreds if not thousands of times. I wanted to find a way to present them in the context of the music i've been making for the last bunch of years which relies heavily on synthesizers and drum machines. In working on this record, I felt the desire to both play these songs in a sort of straightforward way and to disassemble them and see what i found inside. There's also a nod to one of my favorite jazz controversies, the idea that Lennie Tristano used varispeed to create one of his great masterpieces, Line Up. I recorded pretty much everything on my Yamaha 4 track cassette recorder and made liberal use of varispeed and overdubbing. Big thanks to the masters Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Pettiford and Lennie Tristano for the music. I hope you enjoy listening!
