about

I Had A Great Dream is a sonic collage made of sea shanties, spirituals and several original pieces. The project was inspired by years of marveling at several collections of field recordings made in the Bahamas in the 1930's. I was always struck by the way the songs seemed to be integrated with the natural environment in such a way that the ocean almost appeared as another voice or instrument. For this record, i wanted to live inside of that environment and conjure some of the dream-like qualities that i hear in those songs.

The pieces are presented as a suite. Below are the titles and approximate timings for each song.

1. The Flying Cloud (0:00-5:30)
I found this piece in the Library of Congress. It was recorded by Sidney Robertson Cowell in California in 1938. About a sailing ship that was famously fast.
2. Hymn #2 (5:30-11:11)
One of my songs. Made up of 2 distinct sections, one sweet and melodious and the other sharp and cacophonous.
3. Blues For Figure 8 Part 1 (11:12-12:44)
Another original, this one is just the intro.
4. Hymn #1 (12:45-18:11)
Another one in my Hymn series.
5. Interlude (18:12-18:42)
6. I Had A Great Dream (18:42-22:12)
A beautiful hymn that I learned from the Pinder family.
7. When The Whale Get Strike (22:13-26:35)
An incredible and heart breaking song that i learned from a collection called Deep River Of Song: Bahamas 1935
8. Come Down You Roses (26:38-30:56)
Also from the Deep River of Song Collection
9. Blues For Figure 8 (30:58)
A little ballad i wrote for my favorite recording studio.
